Awesome site...newbie question!

geanyus said: "In 2001 AT&T billed me for charges I did not agree to. They reversed the charges and I paid my bill and closed my account. 4+ years later(sept 05) Cingular Wireless (parent company now merged with AT$T) sold and account to Calvary portfolio for the charges previously noted. I contacted cingular and they refered me to the CA. CA stated unless I have proof (beside the lump sum payment of $720.00 and subsequent closure of my account) that this bill remains valid. My credit report states the debt as of Sept 2005. Is this legal? Also I have no proof beside my payment of $720.00. This is depressing as this is truley not my bill. I did dispute it yet the CRA verified. Any advice?"

The CA should be the ones proving the debt is valid. Also sounds like they re-aged the debt....which is illegal. I would shoot of a DV letter to CA and make them prove you owe this, if they can't then they are required to delete it. Post in the other forum and see what our gurus have to say about this one. Sounds to me like they are violating a few laws."
