Question about changing auto insuranceQuestion about changing auto insurance

I got an auto insurance quote by calling Nationwide and they told me their lowest quote was from Safe Co (they quoted me a 6 month price which would save me a couple hundred compared to what I'm paying to State Farm now)
they're going to mail me an application.....my question is if I apply how much of a guarantee is that price they quoted me?
also, I've never changed insurance companies before....so do I just pay for the new policy and then once it's in effect I tell State Farm to cancel my policy?
(I don't want to cancel my State Farm policy and find out later I wasn't approved for Safe Co and be left with no insurance!)
